Radon lives in all 50 states. Nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon levels (EPA). Shocking? We think so too, so much so that we built our business around this grave statistic.
As homebuyers and renters become more informed about this hazardous gas, they ask about radon levels before making their final purchase. They expect their realtor to know the answer. According to the South Dakota Codified Laws §43-4-38; 44 “[The law] Requires the disclosure of known hazards upon sale of the property.”
This law was implemented due to the fact that parts of South Dakota fall into “Zone 1” and the remainder fall into “Zone 2” (see map below). The zones represent the level of radon toxicity in the ground. There is a three tier ranking system – Zone 1 being the highest level of toxicity.
It is no surprise that many of our clients are realtors. Due to the law mentioned prior, they need to have the house inspected before selling it or renting it out.
In addition to realtors, our clients are homeowners worried about their family inhaling this dangerous element. It is recommended to have the home checked even after occupancy.
